TYPE. UNITED STATES. “Granitic rocks, Essex, Massachusetts, found by the late Mr. Oakes! Chester Co., Pa., Dr. Michener!” (Tuckerman 1858).
Description. Lichenized fungus.
Thallus crustose, granular, greenish or yellowish gray; granules round, scattered, or crowded into a thin, chinky crust; hypothallus blackish. Ascomata lecideine apothecia, adnate, 0.15-0.45 mm diam.; disk flat to slightly convex, black; margin thin, black, at length flexuously irregular; hypothecium blackish brown. Ascospores brown, ellipsoid, 3-septate, 12-15 x 4-5.5 μm.
Chemistry. Thallus C+ orange; xanthone.
Substrate and Habitat. Saxicolous on acidic rocks; corticolous or lignicolous.
Distribution. Eastern North America; in North Carolina throughout.
