TYPE. “On small dead branches of oak, Easton, Northamptonshire” (Berkeley & Broome 1852); UNITED KINGDOM, Berkeley s.n. (K, holotype).
Description. Non-lichenized, allied fungus.
Thallus immersed, appearing as a pale stain; photobiont absent. Ascomata perithecia, scattered, globose, emergent; ostiole apical, protruding. Asci cylindrical, 8-spored, uniseriate. Ascospores brown, 2-celled, ellipsoid, 22-28 x 9-12 μm with thick perispore, disappearing at maturity.
Substrate and Habitat. Corticolous on oaks and other hardwoods.
Distribution. Europe and eastern North America; in North Carolina reported from the Piedmont with additional records from the Blue Ridge ecoregion (see mycoportal.org).
